Time Tinkerers: A ChatGPT / Midjourney Game Concept

    What's up WRLD!

    Sup everyone!

I wanted to do something fun and different for this post. Most of us are aware of the power of ChatGPT, Midjourney, and other AI tools alike. They are taking the world by storm and changing the way we work at an unprecedented level.

For example, I mainly use ChatGPT as a coding assistant and I use Midjourney for most of my art-related tasks on All Your Loot. They are incredible tools to help boost productivity or assist you with tasks you otherwise couldn’t do.

So for this post, I wanted to see if I can leverage the power of ChatGPT and Midjourney to create a game concept for an NFT World. I wasn’t expecting anything crazy, but I was definitely pleased with the results!

Hopefully this post can inspire you and other creators to leverage the power of AI to help you discover game ideas for your NFT Worlds or MetaFab-related games!

Let’s see what these robots can come up with.

Generating Game Concept Ideas with ChatGPT 4

First things first, we need some ideas. I didn’t have any direction when prompting ChatGPT as to what type of game I wanted to make, aside from it being an ARPG, RPG, MMO, or minigame-style game.

Let’s see what ChatGPT came up with.

The 10 Game Concepts Generated from ChatGPT

These are the 10 game concepts that ChatGPT generated for me. I was actually very surprised how much I liked them in general. They are cliche, but still have some interesting concepts that I could definitely see working in a real world case.

    1. The Elemental Chronicles (ARPG)
Players choose one of the four elemental paths (Earth, Water, Fire, or Air) and navigate through the world, engaging in dynamic, ability-based combat. They can combine powers with other players to create new and unique attacks, or forge alliances to defeat powerful elemental bosses.

    2. Time Tinkerers (RPG)
Players are time-traveling adventurers who have to solve puzzles and complete quests to repair the timeline. Players can visit different historical eras, explore futuristic landscapes, and interact with a diverse cast of characters.

    3. Guilds of Nexus (MMO)
Players can create or join guilds, each specializing in a unique trade, such as blacksmithing, alchemy, or farming. They can engage in massive guild vs. guild battles, complete epic quests together, and build their own shared cities and fortresses.

    4. Mythical Beasts Unleashed (RPG)
Players become Beastmasters, capturing and training a variety of mythical creatures from folklore and legend. They can explore vast terrains, discover hidden sanctuaries, and participate in battles against other Beastmasters to prove their dominance.

    5. Galactic Conquerors (MMO)
In a procedurally generated universe, players can establish their own space-faring civilizations, explore new planets, and engage in interstellar diplomacy or warfare. They can colonize planets, mine resources, and develop advanced technologies to gain an edge in the galactic power struggle.

    6. Puzzle Realm Adventures (Minigame)
This world features a series of interconnected minigames in which players solve puzzles, navigate mazes, and complete platforming challenges. As they progress, they can unlock new abilities and collectibles, which can be used in other worlds.

    7. Lost Treasures of the Ancients (RPG)
Players embark on a journey to uncover ancient artifacts and hidden treasures scattered throughout the world. They can explore ancient ruins, delve into forgotten dungeons, and decipher cryptic messages to solve the mysteries of the past.

    8. Battle Royale Island (Minigame)
In this fast-paced, competitive world, players are dropped onto an island with limited resources and must fight to be the last one standing. They can scavenge for weapons and supplies, build makeshift fortresses, and form alliances to outlast their opponents.

    9. The Alchemist’s Academy (RPG)
Players take on the role of alchemy students learning the art of potion-making, spell-casting, and magical creature care. They can attend classes, craft unique items, and compete against other students in magical duels and exams.

    10. Heroes’ Coliseum (Minigame)
In this world, players can participate in various gladiator-style events and competitions, testing their skills in combat, strategy, and teamwork. They can earn ranks, unlock new weapons and armor, and compete for leaderboard supremacy.

    Choosing the game concept.

I liked all the concepts to be honest, but one concept truly stuck out to me. Time Tinkerers.

The concept of travelling through different timelines always fascinated me, and in an NFT Worlds game, I immediately thought of travelling to different islands that would act as different “eras”, with each island appropriately themed to each era and containing quests and items relative to those timelines.

So I asked ChatGPT to expand on the Time Tinkerers concept. Let’s see what it’s got.

    Prompt:

    “Time Tinkerers (RPG)
Players are time-traveling adventurers who have to solve puzzles and complete quests to repair the timeline. Players can visit different historical eras, explore futuristic landscapes, and interact with a diverse cast of characters.”

Write an expanded story on this, and include different areas to explore that are within this world and the objective of the game ranging from slaying monsters to acquire loot, solving puzzles, creating allies and enemies etc.”

Expanding on the Time Tinkerers concept continued.

Adding 4 more "Eras" to complete the concept of Time Tinkerers.

Overall, it sounds awesome to me. We have 6 different zones or “eras” to explore, with each era having exclusive items, quests, and puzzles to solve. The players objective’s are to slay monsters, solve puzzles, create allies and enemies, craft and upgrade their gear, and complete side quests for additional rewards.

This all seems fine to me, I could see something like this being a real game. However, I wanted ChatGPT to generate 4 more “eras” for me.

Here’s the complete game concept generated by ChatGPT:

Title: Time Tinkerers - The Shattered Epochs

    Story:
In the world of Time Tinkerers, the mysterious Chronal Crystal has been shattered, creating fractures in the timeline that threaten the very fabric of reality. Players assume the role of Chrono-Wardens, a group of time-traveling adventurers entrusted with the task of repairing the timeline by locating the scattered fragments of the Chronal Crystal and restoring it to its original form.

    Areas to explore:

    • Ancient Egypt: Players will explore the land of the pharaohs, solve riddles inscribed in hieroglyphics, and navigate the treacherous labyrinths of the pyramids.
    • Medieval Europe: Players will experience the age of chivalry, team up with knights to defeat menacing dragons, and engage in epic siege warfare to defend or conquer castles.
    • Feudal Japan: Players will learn the way of the samurai, engage in swordplay duels, and navigate the delicate politics of rival factions to maintain peace or incite war.
    • Wild West: Players will become gunslingers, hunt down infamous outlaws, and participate in thrilling train heists while navigating the lawless frontier.
    • World War II: Players will experience the most devastating conflict in human history, teaming up with resistance fighters to sabotage enemy operations or participating in key battles that determined the course of the war.
    • Distant Future: Players will explore a technologically advanced world filled with cyborgs and artificial intelligence, infiltrate megacorporations, and uncover the secrets of humanity’s future.
    • Prehistoric Era: Players will venture into a world populated by dinosaurs and early human tribes. They’ll navigate treacherous terrain, learn to harness the power of fire, and engage in primitive combat using stone weapons and makeshift tools.
    • Golden Age of Piracy: Players will explore the high seas during the 17th and 18th centuries, joining pirate crews or fighting against them. They’ll search for buried treasure, engage in ship-to-ship battles, and navigate the intricate politics of the pirate republics.
    • Victorian Era: Players will immerse themselves in the age of steam and industry, solving mysteries in the foggy streets of London, delving into the world of occult sciences, and navigating the social intricacies of high society balls and soirees.
    • Roaring Twenties: Players will experience the Jazz Age, infiltrating the world of organized crime during Prohibition, attending opulent Gatsby-style parties, and exploring the Harlem Renaissance’s vibrant cultural scene. They’ll have the opportunity to influence key events of the era and shape the course of history.

    Objectives:

    • Slaying monsters: In each era, players will confront fearsome creatures and adversaries that have been unleashed by the fractured timeline. Defeating these enemies will yield valuable loot, such as unique weapons and armor specific to each era, and even fragments of the Chronal Crystal.
    • Solving puzzles: Players must solve complex puzzles to unlock hidden chambers or uncover valuable clues that will lead them to the scattered fragments of the Chronal Crystal.
    • Creating allies and enemies: Interacting with key historical figures will be crucial to the players’ success. Choosing to help or hinder these individuals will shape alliances and rivalries, impacting the course of history and the players’ journey.
    • Crafting and upgrading: Players will have the opportunity to collect resources throughout their travels, which can be used to craft era-specific items or upgrade their existing gear, granting them new abilities and advantages in their quest.
    • Side quests: In addition to the main storyline, players will encounter a wealth of side quests that will further immerse them in the rich history and culture of each era, offering additional rewards and deepening the bonds with their allies.

As players progress through the game, they will learn the true origins of the Chronal Crystal and uncover a sinister plot that threatens to unravel the very fabric of time itself. It’s up to the Chrono-Wardens to mend the fractured timeline, restore the Chronal Crystal, and secure the future of all existence.

Alright sweet! We have our game concept down, no it’s not crazy in-depth or practical in all reality, but it’s a concept and something to get the imagination workin’. We have our story, our plot, ten different eras to explore, an objectives list, and the endgame goal.

So is there a way we can VISUALIZE the Time Tinkerer’s concept? Well we can try doing that with Midjourney. Let’s try it.

Using Midjourney to generate Concept Art for Time Tinkerers.

What’s the point of creating a game concept without visuals? I love me some visuals. We’re going to use Midjourney to generate some cool concept art for the game.

If you’re not familiar with Midjourney, it is an AI image generation tool based off of a specific prompt you specify. This is done through their official Discord server. You can check out Midjourney’s official site here or join the official Midjourney Discord.

It’s going to be pretty tough to make the generated images cohesive, but this isn’t about cohesiveness. This is just to get some general ideas, think of it as “splash screens” you would see on your favorite game’s loading screens or menu screens.

I generated a lot of images for this concept, using small tweaks to the prompts and a lot of variation testing.

This is the prompt I used to generate the images you will see below, with slight variations:

    Midjourney Prompt:

/imagine minecraft chrono-wardens action poses, epic hero splash screen, time travelers, cyborgs, cowboys, bursting crystals and time portals in the background, minecraft style, –ar 16:9

    Midjourney Prompt
Midjourney prompt for generating Time Tinkerer concept art

One of the biggest factors in getting the right results is the quality of your prompts. This prompt is by no means anything special, I conjured it up in 30 seconds, but for a real project you can definitely get down to the nitty-gritty of prompt writing.

I crammed in as many keywords related to the Time Tinkerers concept, in the hopes it would generate some epic clash of styles and characters.

I found that using the term “epic hero splash screen” yields some very cool results, and using “–ar 16:9” creates images with a 16:9 aspect ratio for getting the most real estate out of them.

Generating assets in “minecraft style” is very hit or miss, you’ll usually get something pretty close, but Midjourney can also produce some pretty wonky and sometimes creepy results. Like the body is generated in a nice minecraft-style, but then the face looks like something out of a horror movie.

    Time Tinkerer Game Concept Art

After an hour or so of messing around with Midjourney, these were my favorite generated concept art examples. Some of the styles clash with the others, but this was all for aesthetics, and I thought they came out great!

There are 16 images in total, so be sure to check them all out! (click on the images to view Lightbox)

The goal was to create as many different “era” looks as possible, as well as just general splash screens that could be envisioned as “Loading” or menu screens. There’s obviously some visual errors, and Midjourney does sometimes like to include awfully generated text in images, but all in all, I think it did a great job.

In a real life scenario, yeah you probably won’t actually be using AI generated assets, but it is still an amazing tool for inspiration alone. It’s a low effort way of visualizing an idea or concept in your head.

After looking at all the images that were created, I decided to select one of them to create an actual “splash screen”. There’s one problem though, the game needs a logo!

Creating the Time Tinkerers logo in Adobe Photoshop.

I’m not much of a logo designer, it takes a lot of design and color theory knowledge that I do not have. But for time purposes, I will create my own with the help of the ol’ reliable YouTube tutorials.

First, I need to get some fonts. To illustrate the “time travelling” concept for the game, I was thinking a western-styled font for the word “Time” and a futuristic font for the word “Tinkerers”. I figured these were good extremes for the different eras in the game.

So I made my way over to dafont.com to find some commercial-free fonts.

After around 10 minutes of sifting through different styles, I ended up using “Saddlebag” as my western-style font, and “Robotech” as my futuristic-style font.

Next, I needed to find a tutorial that will get me that “video game” 3D text style, or something similar. I found this video here and got to work.

    Finished Time Tinkerers Logo
    Finished Time Tinkerers Logo

I chose a yellowish-orange color for the word “Time” as it fits the western-style of the font, and a nice glowing-blue color for the “Tinkerers” font to fit the futuristic style.

I think the logo came out great considering it took less than 20 minutes. In a real world scenario, I would outsource it to a professional, as I consider logo design a completely separate artform that I do not like skimping out on. But for now, this is serviceable for the splash screen.

Creating the Time Tinkerers Splash Screen.

The final step in this process is to create a splash screen for the Time Tinkerers game using one of our Midjourney generated images and our new logo.

I tried using a couple of different images and wasn’t a fan, but ended up choosing this one:

    Time Tinkerers Concept Art

I think this image works great for this purpose, it looks like a screen you would see when you boot up the game, or if you saw an advertisement for it on the Twittersphere. So I’ll go with this.

Now I just need to add a little camera raw filter action, the logo, and some drop shadows. This is the end result:

    Time Tinkerers Splash Screen
    Time Tinkerers Splash Screen

    Wrapping it up.

And voilà, the Time Tinkerers splash screen! This fictitious concept game idea is complete. We have the story, the objectives, the eras, the art, the logo, and a splash screen.

This was a fun little experiment, and I hope it inspires you to come up with some ideas for your future games.

The upcoming NFT Worlds game in conjunction with MetaFab will hopefully produce some insanely high-quality games and experiences, and the community creators are going to play a huge part in that.
