NFT Worlds rebrands to TOPIA
On May 5th, NFT Worlds officially rebranded to TOPIA! A move primarily designed to remove the friction and ill-taste that surrounds the NFT and crypto space.
For traditional web2 gamers, the terms “NFT“, “Metaverse“, “Web3“, and even “crypto” have plagued the space for years. It is generally frowned upon and often ridiculed as a whole, especially by popular streamers like Asmongold.
And it’s not for bad reasons either, there are plenty of bad actors and generally bad projects in the space that bring down the credibility as a whole. TOPIA is looking to change that narrative.
By creating a game that is fun first and foremost, with groundbreaking blockchain technology working seamlessly in the background, TOPIA is looking to onboard millions of traditional web2 gamers and Minecraft players into the web3 space. The goal is to create a web3 and blockchain-enabled experience that everyone can play, without even knowing they are playing one.
Gameplay comes FIRST.
No matter what type of gamer you are, gameplay always comes first! A game with good graphics and storyline is virtually meaningless if the gameplay sucks.
A good example of this is Ashes of Creation, a highly anticipated new MMORPG game being developed by Intrepid Studios. The game looks absolutely incredible, from the stunning UE5 graphics, immersive world, innovative systems, complex storyline, and more. However, the BIGGEST gripe from the community has been the gameplay and combat.
It is far from a finished game, but the gameplay demos have been consistently critiqued by the community for the clunky gameplay/combat system. If the gameplay or combat sucks, the game fails – and that’s the point I’m trying to make here.
The great thing about TOPIA (formerly known as NFT Worlds), is it’s being built from the ground up in Rust with an already massively successful gameplay model. Building a game similar to Minecraft, but innovating all of the most important features players and developers love, with a massively improved engine for high performance and future innovation.
TOPIA is embracing the creator economy, incentivizing developers to make the switch from Minecraft to TOPIA’s robust tooling system, financial incentives, easier developer experience, highly-performant engine, and so much more that Minecraft has failed to offer. All with groundbreaking blockchain technology working seamlessly in the background, allowing a plethora of new systems and mechanisms that we have yet to see.
TOPIA Graphical / UI Improvements
We have yet to see a preview of the TOPIA (formerly NFT Worlds) new game engine, however we have seen sneak previews of some of the new mobs and UI elements in recent months.
Here are some of the leaks:
We cannot confirm the official names of these mob previews, but we can take educated guesses when comparing them to Minecraft. We seem to have mob previews of the Zombie, Spider, Zombie Pigmen, Parrot, Chicken, Squid and Deer as well as a UI preview of the new minimap with waypoints feature.
We can also see more mob previews in the newly released splash banner from TOPIA:
In this banner we can see a Wizard, Skeleton, Slime, another Zombie-like Pigmen, Pig, Bee, Cyborg Robot, and I have no idea what is on the far-right of the image. And of course we have the legendary Baguette sword making an appearance!
These previews look absolutely incredible and a clear upgrade over their Minecraft counterparts.

TOPIA Game Engine
After the fallout of Minecraft banning NFTs from their platform, TOPIA project (formerly NFT Worlds) pivoted to creating their own gaming and metaverse platform from scratch.
It is set to be very similar experience to the Minecraft we all know and love, but with much needed optimizations and new features – as well as more useful developer tools.
Actively being developed since late July-August 2022, the TOPIA Worlds team has been developing their new game engine from the ground up in Rust (the programming language, not the naked game). There are currently 7 full-time developers working on the new engine.
The new game engine will be backwards-compatible with much of Minecraft’s core features, as well as Spigot and Bukkit softwares.
An early alpha release preview of the new game engine has been teased for sometime in late February to early-March 2023, with a playable alpha version slotted for Q2 2023.
The new game engine is currently being built in conjunction with another TOPIA team project called MetaFab. MetaFab is a powerful end-to-end solution for games and gamified apps to integrate blockchain infrastructure seamlessly into their games. The new NFT Worlds game engine is being built on top of MetaFab.
More TOPIA Migration Information
ArkDev provided more information about the migration, including the key dates, Metadata updates, $WRLD staking, post-migration, and new chain.
If you did not catch the official Discord announcement from ArkDev on May 28th, here’s what it says:
We have shared a lot of information over the last few days. Let’s break down a good portion of gray areas we see people discussing, along with firm dates for the migration:
Migration Timeline & Details:
Key Dates: May 2nd-5th
May 2nd: Trading Paused on OS & Blur
Begins the “do not trade/transfer/unstake” period. Starting May 2nd, all trading will pause on Blur and OS will temporarily delist NFT Worlds to prevent trading. We will do our best to halt anything/everything we can activity-wise, but if you decide to start moving around your worlds during this period, you are at risk of not receiving a migrated World.
May 2nd: Metadata Updates
Closely following the pause on OS and Blur, the metadata of the worlds will change to reflect that they are deprecated going forward – all existing NFT Worlds will be swapped to an image indicating that a migration is in progress until May 5th and that the world should not be moved or traded.
May 2nd: World Staking Emissions Paused ($WRLD)
Lastly for May 2nd, reward emissions from the existing staking contract will be paused. You will be able to claim your $WRLD during this time but new $WRLD emissions will not be accrued for staking.
May 4-5th: Address Snapshot
We will perform the ownership snapshot between May 4th and May 5th. This snapshot will determine where worlds for the new contract are sent.
May 5th: Holders Sent Migrated World (no need to manually claim)
On May 5th, we will release the new contract address and airdrop holders their equivalent world(s). Rank, rarity, traits, etc will remain on each world currently owned. You do not have to unstake a world in order to receive your new/migrated world either.
For staked worlds, each new/migrated equivalent world will be sent to the address with authority to unstake the world (for most, this is the address you staked from unless you explicitly specified otherwise). Ledgers will also receive the migrated Worlds. No need to do anything.
Followup: Post Migration
Following the migration, we will work on delisting and indefinitely pausing trading across the board for the old NFT Worlds collection. We will retain the old collection URLs on marketplace in order to prevent scammers hijacking them.
The old collection volume and stats will migrate to the new worlds collection on OpenSea — as well as other marketplaces, aggregators, services, and platforms as can be worked through. Our goal is to consolidate as much as possible. Trading will suspend indefinitely on the old Worlds.
Announcements of announcements:
$WRLD Token and $WRLD 2.0 Token:
We can’t address specifics or answer simple questions like “what happens to the 5% bonus.” Any changes here will happen on a separate timeline (not on May 5th). As of now, business as usual. As mentioned in the space when asked this question, not all steps are public, but we aim to push the project forward with each one. The future is bright here. More details will be given in mid to late May.
New Chain:
We’ll be moving our transactionary layer off of Polygon’s mainnet to our own chain where our token is the native token for transacting. This also means a chain exclusive to our game/platform & creators with thoughtful bridging. This is going to give us a much larger ability to scale as well as further game related utility for the token. This chain will be built on a Arbitrum L3, Polygon Supernet or AVAX Subnet.
World Staking:
Following the migration, staking will remain paused for at least 2 weeks. A new staking contract will be deployed and new/migrated worlds must be re-staked using the new system.
That’s all for now. Exciting few weeks ahead!
One of the bigger announcement in recent days has been the $WRLD token moving to a new chain, moving from Polygon mainnet to their own chain. This is incredibly bullish for the $WRLD token as they will now have a much larger ability to scale and introduce new utility for the token in the future.
Gas fees and network congestion is always a main concern for developers and players alike, and hopefully this move remedies a lot of those issues.
You can also catch more information about the migration as well as frequently asked questions in our recent blog post here!
Conclusion
Exciting days are ahead! I think the team nailed the rebranding, TOPIA is short and sweet, catchy, and makes sense. The website looks phenomenal (amazing music too!), and is primed for stardom.
It’s a very exciting time to be a holder, and watching this project grow from nothing to euphoric success to cataclysm and back has been a rollercoaster for the ages.
All the signs point to the moon, and I have my bags packed!
